Truck Accidents
18-Wheeler | Semi-Truck | Tractor Trailer |
According to research compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were approximately 220,000 people injured in large truck, 18 wheeler, semi or tractor trailer accidents in the United States between 2005 and 2006.
According to a recent article in CNN - "Study: Texting while driving more dangerous for truckers" - a recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute states that "Truckers who text while driving are 23 times more likely to crash or get into a near-wreck than an undistracted driver, while car drivers face the greatest danger when dialing their cell phones, a transportation study found."
In addition, the article also states that "Texting has been linked to a few high-profile crashes recently" including the Boston, Massachusetts, trolley accident and the September 2008 commuter train accident in which "engineer missed a stop signal while trading text messages with a friend, leading to a collision with a freight train that killed 25 people in California, according to federal investigators."
