THE SIMPLE FACTSTM...According to research compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were approximately 62,000 people injured in motorcycle accidents involving in the United States between 1975 and 2006.
In 2005 alone, over 4,500 people were killed in motorcycle related accidents. In 2006 alone, over 4,800 people were killed in motorcycle related accidents. The numbers above are not encouraging.
It has been documented that an overwhelming majority of motorcycle riders killed in two vehicle crashes (more than 85%) were in crashes involving passenger vehicles. In 2005, motorcycles made up 2.5 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States and accounted for only 0.4 percent of all vehicle miles traveled (VMT). As more and more passenger vehicles are put on our nation’s highways, the possibility of being injured in a motorcycle may increase.
